Summary: Every college counselor needs this one!
Comment: I've been working as a college counselor for two years. This book was published just in time to help me get through the don't-know-what-to-do panic period at the start. It introduses to the readers what a college counseling center is look like, and covers nearly every aspect of a college counselor can do. The book's many suggestions and guidlines are based solidly on college student development theories and research findings. But there are not just theories and numbers, but many real program examples which you can modify and use in your work! I especially appreciate Ch. 8 & 9, which emphasize counselors' role as a activist to promote the environmental changes and to facilitate multicultural diversity. Many people misunderstand that counselors only sit in the air-conditioning room talking to people. In fact, some clients' dificulities are largely related to the dysfunction of the whole school systems or some unhealthy cultural beliefs thet exists among students, faculty, and administrators. Counselors need to take a more proactive stance to change the situation. I become more motivated and proud of being a college counselor after reading this book. Even today, when I face some work problem, I still take this book out for a reference!

Summary: Very much needed book.
Comment: This book covers traditional programming for campus counseling & mental health services practices and points the way to needed innovative program development. The authors strongly emphasize thoughtful program development that is student development focused. This should be required reading for all considering a career in campus counseling & for those doing contemporary programming in this vital area, including administrators. Clyde A. Crego, PhD
