Summary: A Great Classroom Text !
Comment: Finally, an Interpersonal Textbook that has excellent, thoughtful activities without asking students to bare their souls to each other and get all "touchy-feely" or suffer the anxiety of being invaded, as some Interpersonal texts do. The activities generate participation and lively interaction between students. This book covers all the bases including self-talk, self concept, language, listening, family systems, cultural and gender communication, professional communication, and even takes a gander at mass media and technological communication. And much more besides. Most importantly the book uses a Liberal Arts approach to communication which requires multiple viewing perspectives and ethical considerations in all communication settings. I have taught Interpersonal Communications in the Pacific Northwest for ten years and this is the finest text I have come upon. It leaves room for the instructor to supplement with his/her own materials and promotes critical thinking and reasonableness in human interactions. It is easily read and defines vocabulary terms through direct definitions and a glossary in the back. I only wish it had a teacher's supplemental text with test ideas and such. If you have questions, my e-mail address is [email protected]
