Summary: A GOOD book, Not Earth shattering.
Comment: I have read two of Carlson's "Don't sweat the small stuff" series books. This one was better than "Don't sweat the small stuff, Just make money". This book has suggestions on how to relate to problems and annoyances in a family environment and is remindful of how important family should be to us. There was little I took from this book that would greatly change my life, but it was good reading and has a few good suggestions in dealing with day to day family issues.

Summary: Don't Sweat The Small Stuff At Home: An Oxymoron
Comment: Since I've been having some difficulties in my home life, I decided this book might help me. Well, it didn't. This is mostly a list of suggestions with no practical tips on how to actually manage your personal life. What's worse is that I've heard them all before. For example, he says that housework is never done, and that you shouldn't expect it to be perfectly neat. Okay, so what amount of mess is acceptable? If I didn't worry about housework, I probably wouldn't do it and my home would look like a garbage dump. Also, he gives no tips on how to manage your time, which was what I was looking for. He just says "Don't worry about getting everything done." You know, that doesn't help me an awful lot. 99 percent of the things I do have a deadline attached to them. He also says that you get rid of your clutter. I agree with him here, but what if you live with a person who insists on saving everything that comes into the house and goes into explosive rages when you throw anything (including things that he/she hasn't touched in years and don't even belong to him/her) out? Should I not 'worry' about it when my husband threatens to throw me out of the house because I put a newspaper from 1995 in the recycling bin? I would have really appreciated some advice on that. I don't have any kids, but I know from experience with my own sibling that if the parent doesn't intervene right away, the kids are going to be at each other throats and things are going to be twice as stressful as they were before. Children don't have the maturity to resolve matters diplomatically. They're egocentric--they want their way, and that's that. It's the parents job to step in and resolve matters. Also, I can't imagine telling my kids "Well, fine then, be bored" when they have nothing to do. That sounds a lot like "Get out of my face", doesn't it? And if you want a guarantee your kids will get into trouble, letting them 'be bored' is the way to do it. I agree with many of his suggestions, but they're things I've heard many times before and have already been put to use. Basically, if you're looking for a light, slightly inspiring read, this is the book for you. But if you actually have problems and you're looking for solutions, you should read some other book.

Summary: Short and Sweet
Comment: It's not rocket science - getting along with your family - but isn't it astounding how many people can't get along at home on a regular basis? Even if you're fortunate to have nearly perfect family relations, you'll find yourself in at least one situation in this little book.
Carlson makes his points simply and in a straightforward manner which almost hits you in the head with: "OF COURSE! THIS MAKES SENSE! WHY HAVEN'T I DONE THIS BEFORE? "
You'll enjoy the suggestions and practicing the ways to get along better with everyone who means anything to you in life (and even those you don't care so much about).
Judge this book by its cover ~ it's filled with often overlooked words of wisdom!
