Comment: In "Native Homes" Bobbie Kalman continues her series, Native Nations of North America, with an overview of traditional dwellings and how they reflected the climate, surroundings and lifestyles of the various nations or groups. Rather than focusing on specific groups, with their individual languages, cultures and beliefs, Kalman organizes the information according to general lifestyle and regions, showing us a variety of homes for both nomadic and sedentary peoples. Longhouses, wigwams, thatched homes, tipis, earth and log lodges, hogans, pueblos, plank houses and arctic homes are all portrayed in varying degrees of detail. A table of contents, glossary and index are included, providing easy access to specific information. The colorful illustrations are drawn from a variety of sources, and span the range from full-scale paintings by well known artists, to works that were commissioned to support the text. There are few books in print that offer a general overview of traditional native homes and the availability of natural resources which gave rise to each. With its attractive format and readable text, this book would be a welcome addition to any library.
