Summary: Lots of great advice
Comment: the main problem I had with other "college survival books" were that they all induced the "DUH" response from me. don't let your grades drop. use effective study techniques. there may be tensions between you and your roommate. DUH. this kind of information is common sense, the things I knew and anticipated in the first place.
this book packs a lot of advice and insights that I could actually USE.. a lot of the pages had me going "ooh, so THAT's what it is." or "hey, I always wanted to know that." as a freshman-to-be, i found htis book tremendously helpful and reassuring. I don't know if my opinion of this book will change after I actually experience my first year, but as of now I feel a lot safer, more confident and ready for next year. and that's exactly what I needed from a book like this.

Summary: This book is SO helpful!
Comment: This book is really helpful for the college-bound senior and for freshmen in college. I particularly enjoyed the segment on roommates, which, as an only child, was a big concern for me! Great balance of advice on academics, dorm life, and social life. The authors obviously know what they're talking about.

Summary: Not a bad book
Comment: As college survival books go, this one ain't half bad. The information is solid, as is the advice. The only flaw it really has is that you don't get a complete picture of the college experience. There is no "personal" slant or definitive point-of-view.
I recommend purchasing the following two books in addition to Arco as part of a 3 book set for your soon-to-be college freshman:
Confessions of a College Freshman: A Survival Guide for Dorm Life, Biology Lab, the Cafeteria, and Other First-Year Adventures
(ISBN: 1589196600) This is a good solid first person account of the college experience, and a decent read.
College 101 : The Book Your College Does Not Want You To Read
(ISBN: 0966412206) The section on computing is dated, but the advice in this book definitely hits home. Guy Stevens holds no punches and has irritated numerous college admission officers.
The Arco book, and the two books listed above will prepare any college freshman for the best, and the worst!
