Summary: You'd Have To Be Nuts Not To Read It
Comment: In Nuts! the Freibergs (husband and wife, co-authors) detail and explain the success of Southwest Airlines. They go far beyond simply analyzing the company and its key "LUV" ingredient for success.

Through consulting and their later work in preparation for this book, the Freibergs have intimate knowledge of Southwest's operations, and put it to good use in presenting the company to readers. Moreover, they overtly show their enthusiasm for Southwest: the book is packed with words of praise from the Fribergs, Southwest employees, customers, and outsiders including GE's Jack Welch. All of these testimonials help to make the case that employees really do love what they do.

The book is separated into four sections: the first details the history of Southwest. The second focuses on how Southwest does business; the third deals with the building blocks of the company's success. Finally, the book concludes -- and culminates -- with a section on how readers can incorporate Southwest techniques within their own business or work environment.

These "secrets" to success are simple: trust your people, treat them as people (not "resources" or "employees"), celebrate the good, and make information easily available to everyone. As simple as they may be, the authors argue that many companies overlook them in deference to policy and procedure. Nuts! advocates that the People come first, the customers second, and everything else starts at third.

Even the best books have their problems, and Nuts! is hurt by the excessive presentation of anecdotes and letters from customers in boxes, which you must stop to read. While they defiantly add something to the book, readability would have been improved by including them in-line with the text.

Overall, this book is clearly a must-read for managers and employees alike. It is an enjoyable fast read and most everyone will take something valuable away from it!

Summary: Falling in LUV with Southwest Airlines................
Comment: Would have been a better title for this book. Southwest Airlines has been often imitated, but never duplicated. What can you say about an airline whose CEO dressed up as Elvis for company functions? Even though this book was written several years ago, the basic message and points of focus on Southwest Airlines' success still hold true even at present. Southwest Airlines has become the model that many airlines had tried to imitate, some with moderate success (like Ireland's Ryanair and the UK's EasyJet to AirTran and Frontier here in the US), and others that failed (like Vanguard, National, and Western Pacific). This book is both a historical account on what helped to create the world's most successful Low Cost Carrier and a motivational book, as it includes the struggles Southwest faced in its infancy (taking on incumbent Texas carriers Continental, Braniff, and Trans Texas/Texas International) that lead to some of Southwest's key processes that hold true to this day. A great read, even if you are not into airline/aviation history, because the business lessons that Southwest has learned do offer something for every company to look at and strive for.

Summary: How To Transform Your Company, Your Job, and Your Life
Comment: I am a Life-Quester, always looking for adventure, passion, joy, and richness in life. What I've discovered is that I have to get out of the cave of my own little world and my own limited experiences and become enriched by the worlds and experiences of others. I use to be an adrenaline junky - now I am a total life passion junky. What does all this have to do with Southwest Airlines? Everything. When I can experience other persons in a process that transforms their lives, that creates a phenomenally successful business of unsurpassed value and service to their employees, customers and stockholders, that energizes, frees, and tickles everone it (they) touches, I am transformed too.

Drink, swish, and swallow the power of SWA and the SWA story in. Then, if you are open and ready, let the creativity flow in you of how what they have done, do every day, and the fun and fulfillment they experience and bring to others open you, your team, your company, your agency, your life up to new wonders and successes that are waiting there, have been waiting, and will always be waiting just around the corner, for you to discover them.

Thank you SWA. Thank you Kevin and Jackie.
