Summary: Pretty interesting
Comment: Reading Between the Lines was the textbook for my introductory sociology class that I took my first year of college. More specifically, my class was about social problems in modern society. This book is a collection of essays by different authors about issues like poverty, gender, education, class, crime, health care, and the environment, conveniently organized into 11 chapters. If you're a teacher, I recommend this book. I think it would be a great supplementary text to any sociology class, especially an introductory one, because it touches on so many different topics. As a student reading this book for school, I actually found myself enjoying it. It really opened my eyes to some of the things that are going on in this country and the world, and it sparked my interest in sociology. If you are someone who is interested in society / sociology, I think you'll also find this book rewarding. Even if you disagree with the viewpoints, essays like "The War Against the Poor: The Underclass and Antipoverty Policy" by Herbert J. Gans, "Portraits of White Racism" by David Wellman and Howard Pinderhughes, and "'Let Them Eat Pollution': Capitalism and the World Environment" by John Bellamy Foster are sure to give you something to think about.
