Summary: This fellow was a bubble waiting to burst !
Comment: You gotta feel something for a guy whose business credo includes: "I believe in sunshine, fresh air, spinach, applesauce, laughter, buttermilk, babies, bombazine and chiffon, always remembering that the greatest word in the English language is 'Sufficiency' ." And how can you help but appreciate a wife's efforts to memorialize her husband's "wisdom" in book form? (It's both heart-warming and a little bit whack-o.) This couple strikes me as being perfectly suited for one another.
But back to the book.
What is it? A compilation of the musings of a man who (apparently) lived his life based upon hard work and platitudes. His thoughts might be characterized as Heraclitus meets Dale Carnegie - (i.e. everything is in flux, so remember your customer's name and birthday) .
But really now, what did he believe? How about this from his personal credo : "I believe in the Motherhood of God. I believe in the Blessed Trinity of Father, Mother and Child." Tell me, please, is this misguided intelligence or intentional blasphemy or simply someone attempting to win at solitaire with a 51-card deck ?
I can't help but wonder if Elbert Hubbard wasn't a child of his times - looking for a synthesis whereby he could embrace both the industrial revolution and Rousseau's Nobel Savage. Alice Hubbard wrote : "From the thoughts of Moses, Socrates, Solomon, Pythagoras, Loyola, Jesus, Buddha, Mohammed, he has brought to us wisdom that applies to the art of living today." Did she do justice to his thinking ? It's hard to know. You, dear reader, be the judge.
In closing, Alice leaves us with these words from Elbert : " A few conquer by fighting, but it is well to remember that more battles are won by submitting". Obviously neither Elbert nor Alice lost any relatives or bosom friends in the Twin Towers on September 11th. Perhaps Stuart Smalley best described Elbert's mindset : "I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it, people like me !"
