Summary: This book is one half of an excellent novel
Comment: As other reviewers have pointed out, "The Risen Empire" does not stand on its own as a novel. This book is really the first half of a two-volume novel the second volume of which is "The Killing of Worlds".
But don't let that stop you from reading this book. By the time I was half-way through "The Risen Empire" I knew I wanted to read the sequel, so I rushed out and got "The Killing of Worlds". Thus when I got to the end of volume I, I was able to move right on to volume II without having to wait. And I didn't want to wait. This is excellent high-tech far future space opera. The only author I would compare Westerfeld to is Iain M. Banks.

Summary: strong space opera
Comment: The Emperor has ruled over the eighty planets of the Risen Empire for over fifteen centuries. When it is time the emperor kills himself in a sacrificial way so he can return being one of the few chosen for immortality. Only the ultra wealthy or the highest nobles can access this immortality technique.
Though much of the populace resents the hierarchy they react as sheep. However, for the first time in centuries a threat has surfaced. The Rix believes society needs to evolve into an artificial intelligence of one mind. They have captured the Emperor's sister, The Empress Child, and are in the process of terraforming a planet to suit their philosophy. A rescue mission led by Imperial Navy Captain Laurent Zai tries a desperate rescue attempt before the orb is bombed into oblivion, the only way to stop the Rix incursion.
When the space opera remains in the present, the story line is loaded with exciting action that grips the audience who wants to come along for the full ride. When flashbacks occur, the plot slows down as a sidebar that typically provides societal background surfaces but also takes away from the rescue effort. Fans who want mind boggling action will resent the flashbacks as intrusions while those who want to understand alien worlds and ways of life will appreciate these as delightful erudition.

Summary: Best Sci Fi I've read this year.
Comment: I loved it, but it ends on a cliffhanger. Fortunately the sequel was already out!
The Risen Empire (Succession) trilogy is built on the shoulders of Asimov's Foundation and Empire, Herbert's Dune, and Peter F. Hamilton's Nights Dawn series, with Galactic empires, weird religions, machine intelligence, and the Living Undead, plus two fairly juicy cyborg/human romances!
If you like that shiznit, you'll love this. Unlike Nights Dawn this book will not give you nightmares.
The book is well written, in a very concise way that makes it an easy read at the same time calling you to re-read whole sections over and over again just for the pleasure of it.
