Summary: From a real student
Comment: The book does have some good points, but it is not organized well. It was terrible for a lot of students in my class because we couldn't do some o the assignments because it wasn't explained in the current chapter but a few chapters down. The book has very few mistakes, but not enough GOOD examples. There are so much more you can do with C++, but the book doesn't show that. In the real world you would do a whole lot more difficult programs. Students can use the book if they want an idea of what C++ is, but you might want to get another book with this if you really want to be a programmer. You can't use this book as a reference because everything is pretty much mixed up in the book. Basically, this book won't help you in the real world, it will however give you an idea of what C++ is all about. I would really recommend something else that is more designed and developed well.

Summary: The BEST book on C++ for beginner I have ever seen
Comment: I am a university student in computer science major and I have read a number of books about C++. In addition to that, I am an immigrant (3 years in the country), so my English isn't very good. "Programming and Problem Solving With C++" was my first book in programming, more then this, I learned C++ by myself with this book. It is written in very clear and simple language and, at the same time, it covers EVERYTHING you need to start programming in C++. After a few years of studying I can say that this is THE BEST BOOK I have ever seen about C++ and about programming in general. If you are a beginner in programming and if you know nothing about C++ or even if this isn't your first programming language this book is a must to have. I want to thank the authors for such a great work.

Summary: A Fantastic Textbook
Comment: If you are an experienced programmer in a language other than C++ you should avoid this book. This text is clearly designed for the beginning level programmer or undergraduate level student who needs a familiarization in the "how to" area of programming.

If you aren't an experienced programmer and wish to begin learning how to write a program, whether in C++ or some other language, this is the book for you.

Unlike a typical programming text this book takes the time to explain concepts thoroughly and simply, provides numerous examples of different levels of complexity, and provides in-depth case studies at the end of every chapter that help demonstrate the usage of new concepts developed earlier in the chapter. Additional items are side bar discussions, these cann be bypassed if you wish, that expound on the historical development of some of the topics under discussion, short discussions at the end of every chapter on debugging, and over the first few chapters the development of a step-by-step framework for sketching out and designed a program. Additional topics that are weaved into the chapters include:
- Input / Output operations
- The proper formatting of code
- The proper use of remarks in program code
- The interaction between computers, the programming language, and the compiler being used.
- How to properly structure a program
- How to maximize the efficiency of a program
- A discussion on the different variable types and what the exact differences are.

All of these topics mean that an experienced programmer who has an in depth computer background, or who has been in the business for a while, will be bored. The new programmer; however, will learn many things that just aren't covered in most programming texts which tend to just teach what you need to do to read and write in programming language.

I've worked with several programming languages and found this to be the best basic level programming text I've seen. Great for a beginner, slow and wordy for the professional.
