Summary: Bravo!!!!
Comment: H.W. Crocker undertook quite a task when he wrote "Triumph." How can anyone capture the entire history of the Catholic Church in one book? Considering his scope, the 400+ pages of text isn't nearly long enough.
Many historical figures - some famous, some infamous, some merely noteworthy, some all but forgotten - spring to life in this book. Crocker succeeds admirably in showing the human side of the Church: the faults and foibles, the sins and weaknesses, along with more than a few examples of holiness and heroic virtue. Then something else emerges along with it: the realization that the Catholic Church has survived vicious attacks from within and without. Even the bad popes have not brought down the Church that Jesus founded on the Rock of the Apostle Peter. It reminds the reader of the words of Gamaliel in the Acts of the Apostles, Chapter 5, verses 38 and 39.
"Triumph" is a history of the people of the New Covenant, just as the Old Testament is a history of the people of the Old Covenant. I do not suggest that "Triumph" was divinely inspired; I merely suggest that there is a comparison to be made in terms of history. Saints and sinners work together to spread the Gospel to all corners of the world. Kings, soldiers, knights in shining armor, explorers, popes, bishops, and priests all play a part in this magnificent pageant.
Also, significantly, "Triumph" is, to a very large extent, a history of Europe. It was in Europe that the Church thrived for most of Her history, and Crocker demonstrates that the arts and sciences reached their greatest heights in Catholic Europe, especially in the Renaissance.
There is, of course, a decidedly pro-Catholic slant to this book. Let the reader be aware. If you are a Catholic, you will find this book to be exciting and inspiring. If you are not Catholic but are willing to consider the Church's side of the story, you will find much food for thought here. Crocker, in writing about the greatest on-going "Triumph" in all of history, has achieved a "Triumph" of his own.

Summary: Triumph: The Power and Glory of the Catholic Church
Comment: This book is spectacular. It is solid history, one of the best footnoted books I have ever read, but it reads like a good novel. The author is a former Anglican and brings forth that pithy English humor in almost every paragraph making it pretty amusing as well. It is also a great apologetic work because it addresses several of the key areas that have been well misrepresented by many (Crusades, Inquisition, Reformation, WW II...). It is a book that should be owned by every Catholic family and in particular I would strongly encourage my children to read it for his/her own knowledge and faith.

Summary: The Companion Text For Catholicism
Comment: It has been said that of the millions of people who hate Catholicism, only a handful do so for its genuine doctrine. H.W. Crocker III, in Triumph: The Power and the Glory of the Catholic Church, a 2000-Year History, will go a very long way toward ending pervasive ignorance of the Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church. Seemingly in the Jesuit tradition, Crocker educates the mass lay public to end misrepresentations and misconceptions of the Faith. Triumph chronicles Catholicism from its earliest establishment in the Roman Empire to the current Vicar of Christ, John Paul II. Unbelievably, the beautiful tapestry of Catholicism's historical context had not been woven in its' entirety until this dynamic text. Crocker's intelligently lucid writing style is seductive to even the most time-conscious reader. Triumph articulates the paramount occasions in religions' foundation and delightfully delves into the religious and secular relations between Popes and national leaders, the "conveniently" omitted facts behind the Protestant Reformation, and unabashedly (and truthfully) addresses the controversial topics of the inquisition, indulgences, and the pontificate of Pius XII. Triumph is a wonderful companion text, one that should be read immediately after the Bible, and the Catechism. I strongly encourage all interested in Catholicism, from those who have chosen to build their lives upon its' foundation to those slightly concerned, to read Triumph. You will be forever enlightened.
