Summary: Summertime and the Readin' is Easy
Comment: Michael Thomas Ford's debut novel is an enjoyable read, easily knocked off in two cross-country flights. There are, however, a couple of troublesome issues that either more experience or better editing could correct. A gossip publication that answers its switchboard in Los Angeles on a Sunday morning? A gossip columnist who is actually at his desk in Los Angeles on a Sunday morning? I don't think so. The most egregious example is Toby's HIV test taken mere days after engaging in unsafe (about as unsafe as you can get) sex and the negative results that make it as if he is free and clear. This is a cruel disservice to readers, especially younger ones. Like other reviewers, I found some of the characters (Marly. e.g.) superfluous. Finally, the happily-ever-after ending makes it way too easy for the Reilly character who, in real life, would be overwhelmed with all kinds of issues to deal with in his life. This is ironic because the author goes to great lengths early in the story to map out Reilly's strong family ties, then ignores them in the end. All of this aside, curl up and enjoy Last Summer.

Summary: A Wonderful Reading Experience
Comment: The first thing that I noticed about the book was the beautiful cover art. I then read the summary of the book and gave it a try. I have never heard of Michael Thomas Ford so I decided to give the book a try and was astounded. This is one of the best gay books I have read in quite a while. All the characters were very likable and realistic. The bond that the characters build throughout the summer in Provincetown is very believable. I hated when the book ended because you lose contact with many of the characters you grew to love through the novel. I hope that Michael Thomas Ford is planning a sequel because I would love to know what the characters are going to be up to next summer.

Summary: Why stop at 400 pages!!!
Comment: I have never enjoyed a Key West vacation more than one I just returned from....relaxing in a swinging hassock, wind blowing gently while I read this most wonderful book. This being my first gay read, I was expecting to be 'entertained' by superficial stereotypes that become boring soon after the first introductions. I could not have been more wrong.
Simply put... very good job. I do hope a follow up book is currently being written.
