Summary: As usual, the British write an excellent mystery!
Comment: This book had been recommended to me, and this was the first time that I had read anything by this particular author. It never ceases to amaze me the difference between American and British mystery authors. I have to wonder if part of it isn't that the British get better literature training in school? The ability to write well, develop plausible plots and interesting characters, and to continue to write that well over a long period of time seems to be the domain of British authors.
I loved this story. The thought of a town being flooded and coming into view again after a period of years due to drought is certainly unique. But it is not impossible as anyone who has been all over the United States, and seen the building of dams or witnessed a dam breaking. The entwined stories from World War II and the modern day discovery of a murder from that time period is so intriguing and different.
Robinson pays great attention to detail, not only in his characterizations but throughout the book. He does an extraordinary job of involving all the senses in the written word to give a three dimensional feel to the story. Too often little time is spent developing this trait...and it is this ability which makes movies from good books so hard to do well (they often are a disappointment because our minds have already pictured the book in a certain way). Because of how well this book is written, I will definitely go look for other books written by this author. His protagonist is very fallible, but very likeable. Terrific! Summary: A wondeful read
Comment: He already thought that he had sunk to the bottom after his marriage ended and he was relegated to desk duty due to one insubordination too many. So when his superior assigns him to investigate human remains found in the remote Thornfield Reservoir, Detective Chief Inspector Alan Banks jumps on the case.
Even before he travels to the reservoir, Alan knows that the extra dry season led to the bones being discovered as the water no longer covered them. The forensic crowd determine that the victim is Gloria Shackleton, a Land Girl who worked in the village of Hobb's End during World War II. Just after the war, a reservoir was built on the site of the village. Though someone murdered Gloria five decades ago, Alan investigates the crime as if it happened yesterday.
IN A DRY SEASON, the tenth Inspector Banks police procedural, may be the best tale in the highly regarded series. The story line is filled with details from the past and the present that cleverly intertwine into a wonderful investigation. Alan's marital and job problems provide much insight into his character. The support cast, especially the deceased's sister-in-law, augments the plot with much depth from two eras. There may be a drought in Yorkshire, but there is no literary one as long as Peter Robinson continues to provide readers with novels that the audience can bank on as being superb.

Summary: A Fanastic Story - You'll Enjoy This One!
Comment: I really enjoyed this book. This is the fourth of the Banks series that I have read, and it is my favorite so far.
A skeleton is found under the floor in a house at the bottom of a flooded reservoir that has dried out in a drought.
Two stories then begin. One, modern day, in which Banks tries to piece together what happend to this woman more than 50 years ago. The second story take place in the past and tells the story of the dead woman as it really happened. All the while, the reader gets to watch Banks try and reconstruct the killing, while also reading the actual story as it happens leading up to the killing.
The other nice thing about the Banks series is that it gives us "Yanks" a slight flavor of what it's like to live in the UK. This is also very refreshing.
Buying this book is money well spent. Give it to a friend when you're done. They'll thank you for it.
