Title: True Stories of the Foreign Legion (Virgin) by Robin Hunter ISBN: 0-7535-0130-9 Publisher: London Bridge Pub. Date: 01 May, 1997 Format: Paperback Volumes: 1 List Price(USD): $5.95 |
Average Customer Rating: 4 (2 reviews)
Rating: 3
Summary: Good Historical Synopsis
Comment: The title of this book may be a bit misleading because the true focus of the book is not individual stories or experiences in the legion, rather a condensed and well written historical account. For anybody considering joining the legion, this wouldn't be the best source of information. Little attention is given to the legion today though it does touch on some of the mystical aspects of this sacred corps.
Rating: 5
Summary: Excellent Concise History
Comment: A less interesting but more appropriate title for this excellent book would be, "A Concise History of the Foreign Legion." I found it truly amazing how Hunter can very effectively size up entire eras of world history. Once he sets the stage for each historical period, Hunter lays out the Legion's role, which is usually to fight and die. This is an outstanding book for its length. If you don't have the time or heart to tackle Douglas Porch's tome (which only goes up to the 1960's) and you want a fast yet thorough history of the Legion, buy this one.
