Summary: Great book!
Comment: The battle of Tanga in 1914 is probably the most famous battle during the 4-year (1914-18) campaign in German East-Africa, and yet it is one of the most obscure and least famous battles when one thinks of WWI. But yet it was a truly magnificent clash of arms, and so should interest any WWI history buffs out there.
The book starts out rather slow and dry as the author sets out the background to the attempt to seize the German port of Tanga, and delves into how the Whitehall instigated the operation.
However, it soon picks up when you begin to understand the incompetence that characterised the whole operation, right from ill-defined objectives to the poor planning carried out by General Arthur Aitken, the commander of the invading Commonwealth force.
The Royal Navy had agreed to a local truce with the German governor at Tanga, and it was thought that this had to be formally called off before the invasion began; this allowed the German garrison to be reinforced by the resourceful and famous Lt. Col. Von Lettow-Vorbeck!
After a fierce fight, involving German askaris, British and Commonwealth troops, and not to mention some very angry African bees, the allied troops were sent scrambling back to their ships and sailing off, leaving a large portion of their equipments and ammunition on the beach, giving Von Lettow-Vorbeck enough supplies to start his four-year campaign!
A very good and interesting read, highly reccommended.
