Summary: Accurate portrayal of the mystical process of making Marines
Comment: As an active duty Marine with experience in both recruiting and recruit training, I can attest to both the accuracy and import of Capt Woulfe's book. He has synthesized the near-mystical process of making United States Marines using the experience of the final graduation event as a template for all of the lessons of Marine boot camp. In particular he focuses on the Corps' core values of honor, courage, and commitment and how they pertain to the ethos of the warrior. Past, present, and future Marines (and their parents and loved ones!) will benefit from this contemporary canvas of the longest and arguably the finest recruit training of any arm of the U.S. military. If I were truly interested in the development of the basic Marine, I would read Thomas Ricks' book first, followed by Jim Woulfe's book for the most accurate and descriptive account of the current process of minting America's Finest warriors.

Summary: An excellent presentation of the nineties Marine Corps
Comment: I highly recommend anyone with an interest in the nations military readiness to read, INTO THE CRUCIBLE" By Marine Capt. Jim Woulfe. The book is well written by a Marine on active duty that is participating in the training of young men that aren't always from the best of families, or the best environment. Some grew up in a world where crime, drugs, and gangs is the norm. Even after careful selection the Marine Corps recruiters cannot always select what the Corps would like to have in a recruit.

Having served in the Corps in WW-II I can testify that a youngster going into deadly battle is seldom trained sufficiently. However, the current final test when primary boot camp is completed is known as INTO THE CRUCIBLE. This final test is 56 hours of willpower, endurance and skill. When you read this well written book you will at times feel the pain of blisters on your feet, and the twinging of muscles in your arms and legs all accompanied with a growling and empty stomach. Whether lyou have went through Marine Corps Boot Training or not, you will believe that you have been there, done that, when you finish.

Summary: a Good look into a training phase
Comment: This book walks you through a phase of a Marine's four year tour. One must remember that it is informative, yet at the same time it does not give an open eyed perspective on the Corps and what Marines experience during their next 45 months of the first four year tour. For that it's wise to look to "Stand By to Fall Out" by Chadz . These two books together will allow for a guided journy through the times that (for the new Marine) will be spent in the Corps and the times (for the salty Marine) that they have already served.
