Summary: A review from a nonmilSF type
Comment: I like books with characters. Story. Heart.

I don't read much milSF, with the exception of David Weber's Honor Harrington series. I'm a non-military, non-gun person. I read John Ringo's work because I became acquainted with him on the Baen bar site (baen.com and go to the bar).

I read A Hymn Before Battle for the above reasons and because it had a neat cover (the milbimbo?). I just got Gust Front and dove right into it - having read the sample chapters and webscription available at baen.com.

Gust Front is an intense book, the pace is *driven*; of the 596 pages or so of the book, approximately 400 are the defense of the cities of Fredericksburg, Richmond and Washington, D.C. The remainder of the pages are leading up to the defense.

People involved with the defense (civilians and military) are described and their fates rendered in heartrending explicitness.

Anyone with any imagination at all will have nightmares. The image of millions of yellow horses coming down the interstates with hostile intent is not easily shaken.

As an example of professional writing, it is superb. Check your heartstrings at the door.

Summary: A new and welcome addition to sci-fi military books
Comment: John Ringo has, in my firm opinion, have become one of the best new sci-fi authors on the market. Move over Drake and Weber, this author has a lot to offer to fans of military sci-fi. Once I have picked up one of his books I couldn't put it down. At over 700 pages it is a long read, but the story keeps the reader well involved, especially in the second half where it is non-stop action.

For someone who is very familiar with the Northern Virginia area, where much of this book takes place, it was weird to read this book. Who would have thought that the greatest invasion of the Earth by the Posleen would occur in Fredericksburg, VA? Mr. Ringo has written a great book in which the reader gets extremely involved as he makes the invasion feel like it is in your back yard. Many times you can almost see the Posleen coming down your street in a massive hoard.....

Good job Mr. Ringo. I am not waiting for the third book in this series to come out in paperback, I am going out to get the hardcover now.

Summary: Very repetitive, with fairly lame subplots
Comment: The criticism of the first book was fair, but I did enjoy the fighting in the first book. In the second book the hero is kind of depressing, his wife got killed, one daughter has become a robot and the other a crazy killer. In this book humans are losing big time and the battles are not very enjoyable. That subplot in the underground city was almost as bad as the couple of chapters in Key West in the first book. Then, all the women in the book are white trash psichos. This book stinks, try reading instead White Wing by Kendall, or the Paratwa series by Hinz.
