Summary: Oddly intriguing
Comment: I favor Dean Koontz's writings and look forward to any of his new work, but am not a fanatic and only get to follow what is in audio book format. "Odd Thomas was hard to stop reading and take a break from. It reminds me of a dark myth, much like stories told around a campfire during full moon, but without the "jumpy spooky stuff"; it feels as if the story could be real and not fictional and you're desperate to hear how it ends before the days is out. I can't explain why, aside from it's simply intriguing.
I enjoy in the story telling flavor of Koontz, the colors, details, and character choices and their names he uses for his stories; this one has all that, but not the long epic details many writers, including Koontz, use to fill pages. The main character, "Odd" Odd Thomas, is all the description required for you to know him; is a simple fry-cook not-so-simple hero that sees a dead people including a dead Elvis for a friend, nice twist for creepiness. They seek out his help to fix the ill fate that caused their deaths and move on in to the next life; I guess that's the hero part.
The story flows along well, building and climbing for the climax that's not disappointing; but is! I didn't care for the ending chapter, it should have ended differently, this was out of character for Koontz; especially after the way the story keeps reminding you of how fate should be, must be, will be. Koontz should produce more about "Odd's" friend "Little Ozzie", this character is the most intriguing of the entire book. He (Ozzie) should write some of the books describe from the storyline describing "Little Ozzie"; he is an author. Ever notice how writers have many characters that are authors? The mystery tales "Little Ozzie" is described to have published in this story would make a great following for and maybe should include an "Odd Thomas".

Summary: Nothing "Odd" about this read
Comment: For the first time in a long time Dean Koontz has written a book that delivers on any level you can name. Odd Thomas is a suspenseful, powerful, imaginative, and entertaining story. The characters are believable and seem to leap off the page at the reader. Of course, I like all of Koontz's works, the early stuff and his later, more spiritual works.
Odd Thomas is a short order hash slinger in a small out of the way town of Pico Mundo. Besides being a talented writer, Odd sees and communicates with ghosts. Not just any ghosts mind you, but all types of ghosts. One type that is especially bad are the "bodachs" a particularly malevolent spirit that is attracted to and seem to feed off of violence. These spirits are in town and associated with a character Odd names "Fungus Man." As you read you realize that Fungus Man is much, much more than he appears on the surface to be.
This is an unsettling read. Koontz manages to keep the reader slightly off balance. This causes a little disorientation and some readers may be critical on this aspect of the novel. However, when you reach the end of the book you'll be glad that you hung around to the end.
Koontz is a talented writer. His books are meant for intelligent readers. Odd Thomas will not disappoint.

Summary: He Sees Dead People!
Comment: Odd Thomas--and that's his actual name, not a description of him--is a lot like what you would imagine the Haley Joel Osment character from "The Sixth Sense" might be like fully grown--if he had grown up in an obscure fictional California town with a psychopathic mother instead of one of the biggest cities in the country and a loving mother.
Odd not only sees ghosts, he interacts with them and tries to help them if he can. He also sees evil spirits he calls "bodachs", who seem to feast psychically on injury and death. And he must literally race against time to prevent a disastrous event that will end up costing him almost more than he can bear.
This was a good book, but also a depressing one. In one chapter Odd describes a childhood incident with his mother that would leave most people (me included) emotionally scarred, or even insane, for life. Of course, Odd himself realizes that he could in fact BE insane, and THAT could be the reason he does what he does.
OF course, the book does include some of the wry humor and the numerous eccentric characters that pepper Koontz's books, and it is well-written and fast paced as usual. It also has a very jarring and depressing ending, so if you're one of those people who likes to read the last page of a book before you get to the end (you know who you are), DON'T DO IT! You'll ruin the book!
