Summary: Years Ago If I Had Read REEL PEOPLE I'd Have Been a Star!
Comment: I had a wonderful job at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre in England: I had to coach Blanche Dubois(--the actress playing her!) and the rest of the cast of 'A Streetcar Named Desire'. I was coaching them on their American authenticity. The job, regretably, was nearly fifteen years ago, and I did not have REEL PEOPLE. If I had, the depth of understanding that I would have had in to the psyche of Blanche, would have converted a good job in to an outstanding one. I would have been a far more insightful and constructive coach. Thankfully the actress playing her was marvelous--nothing to do with me!
Essentially the book is a fun read, and it is an accessible and fascinating way to easily gain psychological literacy! Gluss and Smith offer us an intelligent approach with which to take on several well known cinematic characters. Basically he puts them through analysis and takes us on their journey as if these characters were real people (thus the clever and pertinent title!).
It is a wonderful gift for an actor, a director, a teacher, a theatre academic, someone involved in the training world, anyone who finds psychology interesting, anyone who adores analising people. We found it to be great fun at dinner parties: you will discover much about some of the friends you thought you knew well!

Summary: It's All In One Place
Comment: It's all in one place now- and film and television writers have Dr. Howard Gluss to thank. Reel People is a wonderful and fascinating tool to help writers deepen their- and by their extension the audiences experience of their characters.
Dr. Gluss explains that these personalities need not be disorders but rather should be looked at as personality orders that can range from the psychotic to the neurotic. The real value in this book seems to be in looking at various personality styles and combining characteristics to form unique characterizations. Reel People is not a "How to Write" book but rather a series of scholarly essays to aid in the art of story telling. It sparks creativity rather than limit it.
It made me want to write... as well as go to the video store.

Summary: Instructive, engaging, and fun.
Comment: What a great aid to writing "REEL PEOPLE" has been for me. A cast of strong, coherent characters is the basis of all truly good films -- and the hardest thing for writers to master. Nothing I've ever read has been as helpful as this analysis. Finally, an aid to writers, beginning or veteran, that gives us a handle on the mysterious process of character creation. Not only that, but it's a real treat to read: instructive, engaging, and fun.
