Summary: Interesting historical fiction
Comment: I am always fascinated by accounts of World War II, even when the account is fictionalized, as this one is. This book approaches the subject from a fresh perspective: Not that of a soldier, but of a pilot's lover, left to pine for him on the home front.

The first-person narrative voice comes through strong in this story of a young woman's coming of age, and readers will relate to the character. I believe that even readers who have not known Ms. Palmer personally, as I have, will appreciate the depth of emotion that could only have come from an author who has experienced similar situations and the intense feelings they invoke. Although fiction and not autobiography, it is clear that Ms. Palmer draws heavily on her own recollections.

Ms. Palmer's writing is rich with emotional intensity. At times it reads almost like stream of consciousness. Her command of simile and metaphor is first-rate. The dialogue, while sparse, rings true. Reading this book was interesting and rewarding for me, having not been born in time to have experienced this tumultuous era firsthand.

A Thousand Candles is short, but demands a careful read. At times I was thrown by abrupt shifts in time and setting. While the author gives great attention to the narrator's plight, along with her attendant thoughts and feelings, none of the other characters is as well rounded. Ms. Palmer tells a good story, but for all the details of her heroine's interior monologue, she has not developed any of the other characters very thoroughly.

This book is great for what it is: An interior narrative. As for me, I would have enjoyed more historical detail, clearer setting, and more character development. I could easily see this novel being two to three times the length it is.
