Summary: just another Flash MX book rushed out to make money
Comment: This is just another book in the series of the greatest copy and paste codes Flash book, if you're a fan of the last 2 books, I guess you will enjoy this. Anyone familiar with actionscripting should get something out of this book, provided you have a decent knowledge and patience to go through tutorials that are full of inconsistency in codes or lack of explanation. The reason I feel this book is rushed out of the door is apparent even from the first chapter, check out pg 10. The first set of scripts with two functions, setValues() and setAnimation(), only the second one is used, yet they printed out on the page, and leave no comments on the source file. This can mislead many readers that bought this book that want to learn the new Flash MX actionscripts. I find useful tutorials, but lack of detailed explanation. You're better off buying "Macromedia Flash MX ActionScripting: Advanced Training from the Source", which is an excellent book for the first generation of the FLash MX books out now. Again, slapping some well known authors and rushed the book out is always been the practice for this series, take your chances.

Summary: Book for Pros and Learning how to implement the code
Comment: I've been using Flash since version 3 and remember buying this particular book for version 4. I buy this particular book because it has specific projects that I can implement now. It speeds up my development time. Do I tweak the code and break it so that I can learn more from it? YES Is this book for an absolute beginner in actionscript? NO This book assumes a certain level of knowledge. If you don't know actionscript and can't recognize the different constructs and where to put them then go find a different book that will teach you that aspect of actionscript. This book is for the pro who wants to work through some projects using MX to quickly get up to speed with AS in Flash MX. Its also for the learner who learns through working through projects. I'm a software trainer and believe me, lots of people learn via working through preexisting projects (I do). You still need to understand the Actionscript constructs before doing this but it complements that by showing you specific examples of actionscript use. Buy this book with another book that will teach you Actionscript like Moock's book or Sham Bhengal's book. Read them together or the AS book then this for specfic examples of implementing code.
Congrats, nicely written and to the point for me.

Summary: Looks good...
Comment: on the outside and when you browse through it looks to be pretty concise, the problem lies in the fact the book and cd don't match, I've seen other reviews that say they received no .fla files I have the .fla files but the work files are actually the same as the finished files except for the small fact that they don't work (code is exactly the same from what I can tell actionscripting wise but the examples never work and I spend more time deciphering the mistakes to double check my work than I do learning the ideas. Maybe they should have made this a bug testing book at least you would have a chance to learn something.
