Summary: Shows how true faith is rare, even among spiritual people
Comment: Ruth Burrows, a Carmelite nun in England, punctures pious ideas of faith in her challenging book, To Believe in Jesus. She shows the self-deception attached to much religiosity. Shoring up a secure concept of self underlies, she says, much of what passes as faith. True faith, by contrast, means a death to preoccupation with self and a turning towards God in our weaknesses and imperfections. Faith is not hiding or even overcoming these weaknesses but of surrendering all to the God who is Father. Only the shedding of what Ernest Becker calls "character armor," can a person truly put their faith in God, not in themselves. This book is a challenge to all facile views of relgious belief. Not for the fainthearted or those who think they know it all.
