Summary: Shakespeare as a Catholic: an detective story
Comment: The intriguing thesis of this book is that Wm. Shakespeare was a Catholic at a time when such was illegal. Elizabeth was queen in the eyes of the Church of England, which was created by her father, Henry VIII, in order to marry her mother, Anne Boleyn. In the eyes of the Church of Rome, she was illegitimate and not in the royal succession. Under the persecution, many Catholics fled England for the continent, others attended Anglican services but remained secretly loyal to Rome (called "church papists"), still others, "recusants", refused to attend services, and were fined. Honigmann gives evidence for William's father being a recusant. He puts forward some arguments (which are quite persuasive) for connections between Shakespeare (during his so-called 'lost years') and various Catholic households of landed gentry in Lancastershire. However, none of the lines of logic and records cited are conclusive but the author makes no claims except to validity of the conjecture, while calling for more research on the subject. Several of the documents more recently uncovered seem hard to explain away without this viewpoint. For an academic book, this is pretty well written and easy to read.
