Summary: A Tremendous Insight into Atonement
Comment: 19th century Scottish theologian John Macleod Campbell is little known in American theological circles. This ignorance belies his importance in the history of Christian thought and the beauty of his mature work. Campbell spent most of his life "on the hunt" for a more enlightening, more enlivening vision of Jesus Christ. He succeeded eminently towards the end of his life, although earlier works like his Sermons & Lectures give evidence of his being on the cusp of a theological breakthrough. The person and work of Jesus Christ promoted by Federal theology and the Westminster Standards (Confession and Catechisms) in Campbell's opinion was both poor and shallow. In addition, it was stutifying for the living of the Christian life. Campbell pressed on in his preaching and thinking. Who is Jesus Christ? Really? The result, after much reflection, and thirty years laboring in Glasgow as a non-denominational pastor (he was defrocked by the Church of Scotland for preaching the Christian's assurance of God's love and the universal nature of Christ's person and work) is this classic for which he received national notoriety and an honorary D.D. from the University of Glasgow. Campbell is little known today--particularly in America. This is our loss. Careful attention to his work here will repay tremendous dividends for the patient reader. It is one of the theological classics of the 19th century and well worth the patient study necessary to understand it. Also beneficial in this edition is the introduction by Emeritus Professor James B. Torrance of the Univ. of Aberdeen, one of the foremost authorities on Scottish theology and Macleod Campbell.
