Comment: I really don't have much to say. I bought it for a class, read through some of it.

It's a true history book, which means disaster for me. Thousands of names, dates, places, times, and events are thrown at you, then referenced to later on in the book. As if you even have a chance at remembering half of them.

For a textbook...slightly too indepth unless it's a college class. For a book to read on your own time...WAY too indepth to make it worth it.

BUT it gets three stars because, true to Penguin books, it is a great book. Can't fault it in the facts and grammer section. Lots of details, great for papers and getting in over your head in mideval history. Good luck in reading it!

Summary: An excellent beginning to Medieval studies.
Comment: I thought that Mr. Keen's book was an excellent read for the student of Medieval history. His accounts and insights of medieval religious and political thought were throughly explained. The author spends a great deal of time on the complex relationships of the Papacy, England, France, Germany, and Italy with each other. The one negative about the book is that the author spends practically no time on medieval Spain. The bibliography was good, though it should be updated. Overall a good short work for someone to get a good basic understanding of Medieval history.
