Summary: A stylist on a stylist
Comment: George Meredith remains the most unstudied and undervalued of the great Victorian writers. Of the ten books or so of Meredith criticism that I have come across, this book seems to me the best. It is too brief and spends too much space taking one through the plots of some of the novels, but Pritchett, as himself a distinguished writer of fiction, writes with real insight and authority on the originality of Meredith's technique, which anticipate many of the techniques of modernism. Since at the same time his own style is remarkably elegant and felicitous, this is a book of real distinction.
