Summary: Falls short of excellence
Comment: I have found that there are a large number of errors in this text, particularly concerning the bowfin skull. The drawings are often sub-par and difficult to follow (particularly muscles, brains). The muscle drawings are particularly poor and it is virtually impossible to determine exactly what the lines are pointing to. Considering that the accompanying text book has some of the best drawings I have seen in a comparative anatomy text, I find the poor quality drawings particularly onerous. My students also do not like the excessive price of the book. It seems as if there is too much information for a laboratory manual with many unnecessary duplications of figures in the text book. Also, there are too many figures with added color where color in not necessary. The excessive figures and added color increase the price of this book and should be changed in future editions. This text has great potential because it is very well written, but I hope a second edition will include better, more accurate drawings and exclude unnecessary figures and information. I will probably be switching to Saul Wichnitzer's "Atlas and Dissection Guide for Comparative Anatomy" in the future because it has far better figures, and in comparative anatomy lab, the figures are by far the most important thing.
