Summary: Difficult but neccesary reading
Comment: This is a very difficult book. Not that the writer couldn't write: it is well written. But the subject is very complicated. Ishiwara's thoughts about a confrontation between empires are for modern men not easy to understand. Just like the impact of these ideas on the Japanese military. His handeling in Manchuria according to these ideas brought him fame. But in later times the young officers rebuked him, because he wouldn't allow them the same freedom of action he himself took in 1931. Peattie tells the story of his life and thinking in a very well manner. But you have to know a lot about Japan during the wars to understand his writings completely. A fine book for lovers of Japanese history.
