Summary: Fascinating History of the Gun
Comment: Ken Alder's excellent book is at once an engaging history of the gun, an account of the emergence of modern warfare, and a demonstration of how technological innovations can never be divorced from their social contexts. The microhistory will be of interest to historians of science, and the analysis of the French Revolution is of interest to scholars of the 18th century such as myself. It's not so much a book for generalists, but it's an excellent secondary source -- a great teaching text. Two minor objections: Alder sometimes grants himself privileged knowledge of the thoughts and feelings of historical figures, displaying the temperament of a novelist rather than an historian. Also, he falls into the common rut of assuming that everything "modern" originates with the French Revolution rather than the upheavals of the 17th century. This is, nevertheless, an impressive book.
