Summary: Applicable in Any Time
Comment: It took me 60 pages to realize this book had been written over forty years ago; and then, only at the casual mention of a date. I found just about every issue in this book to be one of today also. The threat of nuclear weapons, wars in far away countries, and the viewpoints of the people. This book is timeless, and will continue to be so until nuclear weapons are completely lost or we blow ourselves up.

The characters seemed very real. Their reactions to the forcasted time when radiation sickness was to strike were varied and extremely interesting. I was especially intrigued by the widespread instinct towards something like conscious denial, i.e. the planting of gardens for the following spring and such. I found the basic tone of this book to be similar to 1984, though not focused on the government, simply civilians in post-nuclear conditions. Anyway, the basic story line is that the northern hemisphere was is mostly void of any live whatsoever from a complicated nuclear war and the south (focusing on Australia here) is slowly catching the radiation. The time left to live is able to be forcasted approximately. Mostly, people tend to stay in their homes and the strict rules of society break down.

Summary: Startlingly simple and powerful
Comment: Nevil Shute's "On The Beach" is a classic for good reason. Shute takes the most horrific event one can imagine--a worldwide nuclear event--and then turns the microscope on it, focusing in on just a few ordinary people who must wait for death as it drifts over to their hemisphere. We see military personnel, housewives, businessmen, and more. They come alive because they are just like you and me and the people next door.

Shute's very great accomplishment here is to examine how each of the characters deals with their certain death. Everyone knows they'll die eventually; these characters have the difficulty of knowing that death will arrive soon, and that it will be slow and agonizing. What do they do? Each reacts differently and the humanity and humility with which some of the characters make their choices is startlingly powerful. Especially in a time when the world seems so uncertain, so cruel, this is an important book to read--or re-read if you picked it up years ago. Prepare yourself for a powerfully moving experience.

Summary: The Mystery
Comment: On The Beach By Nevil Shute is an extremely good book. it keeps you on your toes and doesnt let you put it down. This book started off with two brothers who lived in a small suburb. The younger brother works for rich people being a valet attendent. He also has a job on the side that no one knows about but his close friends. The younger brother bought a really nice new bike ( motorcycle) and the older brother Jack wonders where he got it from, but he wont tell. A little later on that night they find the younger brother dead on the beach ( thats where the title comes from). His brother who works in a law firm wants to investigate this to the fullest and find out who killed his brother, but what he doesnt know is that the people surrounding him are trying to stop him from finding out. Later on Jack loses his girlfriend and then his job and then everything. he is losing these things because they're all in on te murder of his brother and they dont want him to find out. His brothers friends all decide to help him with the case and try to find his killer. What he doesnt know is that his boss has hired hitmen to try and kill him and his friends. One of the hitmen threatens Peters friend at the docks and almost kills him. He later on finds out that his brother was prostituting himself to his boss and others and was having an affair with Jacks (now) ex-girlfriend who is his bosses daughter. Towards the end of the book Jack and Peters friends trap all of the suspects into this hidden chalet and keep them there and make them have a trial. Earlier jack wired into the TV and created a news station and found out how to brodcast it live. Everyone is watching because he is holding the richest family hostage along with other suspects. Jack makes them tell the truth on national TV. The Case is then solved. I enjoyed this book a lot. i like murder mysteries. I reccommend this book if you like that sort of thing.
