Summary: An enjoyable read...
Comment: Selah's Bed is a hauntingly guttural look into the soul of Selah Wells. Her scars are burned in that crevice that connects a woman's thighs. We accompany Selah on a tumultuous ride through her soul with her pitiful puberty as our tour guide. We toggle back and forth between the past and present learning why Selah's lifeline is not her husband, but the various other men who share her bed.
"Sex was a way to stop the crying, the powerlessness of not feeling beautiful. She always felt beautiful under lustful hands. Lustful hands can't lie. The want, greed, and emptiness is real..." This isn't a story of self-discovery or self-awareness. No, Selah is already aware that she's got issues. She knows why she has issues. She wears her self-antipathy like a medallion around her neck, carrying her battle scars daily. Selah's Bed marries Selah's childhood with her adulthood, showing the bad links. She had two absent parents. Her mother neglected her and her father left her. The novel chronicles several other childhood events that are the stimuli for Selah's compulsive infidelity. As Selah exposes her soul, it seems as if Adams dissects Selah's soul. We peer deep into Selah's bones, which is how deep her pain goes. Adams is relentless in revealing Selah's introspection.
This is a very deep book. It is mostly narrative, with piercing prose comprised of intricate metaphors, and similes that slid off the page into my imagination. Introspective. Initially the sporadic back and forth through time caused me some confusion. I'd loose track of time and Selah's age. Once I adjusted to the time warps, I could easily follow the flow. Selah's Bed is an enjoyable read.

Summary: The shattered soul.
Comment: Selah's Bed is a very concise story about a girl who experiences a lack of love and grows up a women who seeks it in the most primal form Sex.
She can't love deeply and completely because emotionlly she is a shattered soul. In reading the book, I felt at times disturbed and sad but never bored.
I like the raw honesty and flashblackes that takes the reader into the worlds of selah the chid vs selah the women. There were gaps I felt weakened the preciseness of the work such as, the omission of transition of selah after her abortion to selah as a married women. I found it pecular that her boyfriend did not seek her out while she was pregenat but then married her after she aborts their child. That just did not ring true with me.
This book will get your attention but it portrays I felt the stereotypes of black -poor and fast females that is overrated in the media. I read it but felt disaappointed.

Summary: Not as good as her first
Comment: I was very eager to read Selah's Bed after reading Resurrecting Mingus. I did not enjoy Selah's Bed at all. I pretty much figured out why Selah was doing what she did, but the story never really grabbed me. The story is not just about Selah, but her Grandmother who has a drug problem. The author has a unique lyrical way of writing, but I just did not enjoy this particular story.
