Summary: Not a four-leafed clover in sight
Comment: Let me tell begin by saying that I have been haunted by this memoir for months now. I didn't write a review immediately; rather I've been getting this aftertaste of this book since it's completion. I simply cannot stop thinking of the sorrow and pain this family endured and everyone around them for that matter. When I first delved into this book, I got a bit tired of the sing-song passages; but it's written with such simplicity and frankness that it ties in with the "complex simplicity" of McCourt's world as he knew it. His dark descriptions were so vivid I honestly felt hungry and damp while reading it! The most inspiring aspect is that Frank McCourt triumphed over all his diversities and actually survived, for starters, and became a success. I hadn't much knowledge of Ireland especially during this bleak period until reading this. When I envisioned Ireland, I saw leprechauns and sunny, green fields, and Irish eyes smiling; well, there was none of that here. ANGELA'S ASHES is a poignant testament of how the human spirit can prevail.

Summary: Heartbreaking & Hilarious
Comment: This extremely accurate description of life in in early forties Ireland is both heartbreakingly sad and unbeleivebely amusing at the same time. The memoir focuses on little Frankie Mccourts childhood into teens. Its a rollercoster of emotion from chapter one. Frankies father is a jobless drunk who cares more about his pint of Guiness than his everexpanding brood of starving and dying children and wife (Angela). The book takes you through the years on how the Mccourt family survive by begging at the Vincent St Paul charity for even the smallest amount of food to survive on or new shoes for the boys to go to school and how they move from room to house to room to avoid paying rent and staying with mean relatives who care none about the poor familys plight. Now dont let that fool you into thinking this is a depressing book, it is not. Frank McCourts style of writing and frank honestly will have you laughing and crying in the same paragraph. As Frankie McCourt gets a little older he experiments with sex which he refers to as "the excitment", masturbation and petty theft all of which leave very frank images but not disturbing! He also tears himself up over not going to confession to releive himself of the terrible burdens he carries. Its definately a page turner and a must for anyone feeling remotely sorry for themselves.

Summary: One of the best books I read.
Comment: This is the kind of book that you devour so much it is interesting. The words aren't enough to describe such a beautiful story and writing. It is extremely sad but it makes your life like the one of a king afterwards. You won't be able to complaint. It's strong and the only thing to do after you read this wonder, is to grab Tys, the sequel. Also very interesting...
