Summary: A touching children's fable
Comment: William Mayne's book Pandora is a gentle, subtle, but probing tale written in effectively simple language. The protagonist is Pandora, a pet cat belonging to a young couple. Pandora lives a happy and ideal life with lots of attention and affection. But one day, the couple bring home a bundle wrapped in a shawl. Suddenly, Pandora is in the way or is too dirty. Pandora seeks a life alone and becomes wild. Eventually, she has two kittens and -- lo and behold -- understands. She returns home with her two kittens and is accepted back into the family who, in turn, have developed a new sensitivity to Pandora.
The book is very clearly written for those young ones experiencing displacement after the birth of a new sibling. However, the book has a broader appeal as a story of one's journey from silent hurt, resentment and pride to understanding, forgiveness and reconciliation. The illustrations are exceedingly expressive (crucial to an effective children's picture book). I'm dumbfounded that this book is out of print. I'm not the least surprised that the price for a used copy is higher than the original price. If you have a hurting child, this book is worth it.

Summary: Beautifully illustrated and thoughfully written
Comment: William Mayne has written a touching and thoughtful book about a cat and its human attachments. The illustrations by Dietlind Blech compliment the story perfectly.
