Summary: A noir classic that shouldn't be passed up!!!
Comment: Jim Thompson is one of America's most famous, and prolific noir writers. I have only in the past year discovered his novels, and they were a great find. "The Killer Inside Me" is considered his all time best novel, and having read it I can see why. The story of Lou Ford, a small town Deputy Sheriff, whose seemingly benign appearance, conceals from view, the murderous psychopath lurking within the mind of Ford, ready to explode at a moments notice. What makes this novel so fascinating is that is written in the first person narative, with Ford telling the story. The reader enters the mind of a psychopath, seeing the world through his eyes. The reader will not want to put this novel down. My only criticism is that the narrator describes his own death, and to a certain exten this breaks the mood of the novel. Nevertheless I do recommend this novel to those who enjoy the noir genre. For a more recent work in this narrative style, which I feel holds together better than Thompson's book, I also recommend James Ellroy's "Killer On The Road". Read "The Killer Inside Me" first, then Ellroy's work, it makes a great comparison for plot, style, and how noir has changed over the decades.

Summary: Noir Classic Will Slay You
Comment: I imagine that Jim Thompson's "The Killer Inside Me" was quite a shocker upon first publication in 1952, when the idea of the psychopathic serial killer was still quite unusual. Thompson's protagonist, small town deputy sheriff Lou Ford, tells his tale of murder and mayhem in the first person, which adds to the book's sense of dread. 1950s-era notions of morality and chivalry are also key to the development of the plot. A prosecutor can, for example, accuse a man of murder while questioning him, but it isn't good form to degrade his mother by calling him an S.O.B. while doing so. The only caveat to recommending this book is that its shock value is somewhat diminished by the many real life horrors our modern society has witnessed since it first hit the shelves.
A quick page turner and relatively brief at 244 pages, this is one tough "Killer."

Summary: Hard Boiled crime at its best
Comment: This was my first Jim Thompson book and although it will not be my last, I can't see how he can top this - I have heard that this is his best, so maybe he never did.
There are too many plot twists and suprises, so I can't say much about the specifics, but I can say that as pace of the book picks up, the killings get more elaborate and chilling.
Highly Recommended!
