Summary: Excellent explaination step by step approach
Comment: Another good asp.net book explaing when to use and how to use different Data web control and Binding Method in real world example.

It helps me how to design for my company's interface desgin for the new .net application beside the functionality of database connection. No other .net book use the same teaching approach in such clear and detail explanation.

Thanks for Scott Mitchell and his associates' work.

Summary: Not a reference, but a necessary Kick Start
Comment: The problem with .NET is that there's too much to learn, and when you have deadlines, trial and error can be costly. I've taken some classes and have half a dozen books piled on my desk. They just give a sugar coated review of the data web controls. I needed a specific subject covered and this book did the job.

I think that if you are developing any kind of data driven site, you can't afford to avoid the data web controls. If you do, you might as well go back to using Classic ASP. These controls make .NET worth switching to.

This book has been worth every penny spent. A small price when you think about the time it saves. One of the biggest problems I had learning .NET was trying to figure out the best tool for the job as there seems to be millions of potential paths a developer can take. This book takes it's time showing examples of when to use the different data web controls.

It's probably true that when you're done reading this book you can give it to a co-worker. I don't believe it was meant to be a reference. That's what MSDN Library is for. Pause for a moment, give this book a read, then move on.

Summary: ViewState is required
Comment: First off this is an awesome book if you want to use the data controls that come with asp.net. There is no equal out there.
Secondly, buyer be warned. In order to use the controls you must have the ViewState enabled. What this does is increase the amount of data that needs to be sent back and forth between the server and client. This is not ideal if your writing a web site where you expect dialup users to use. The response time will be blown.
