Summary: Absolutely wonderful deal for beginners
Comment: This compiler edition is just the best for anybody who wants to get started learning Java. The compiler JBuilder2 is easy to use, but what's more, it comes with e-book Sam's Teach yourself JBuilder2 in 21 days, so you are getting 2 books for the price of one. Both books cater to beginners and teach things step by step. Everything works and works well, and I went through the book in a month or so (I have had some C/C++, but I don't think people without programming experience will find the books too hard). I am now writing applets games for my kids to play. One can download the most modern JBuilder from Borland for free, but it is also really advanced. It automatically packs your source code with all sorts of stuff, none of which I understand. I like life simple. Now that this book is out of print, one can get it used really cheap here at amazon. I just think this is the best and cheapest kit to learn Java, and I've looked around. If you are starting out with Java, buy this and you won't regret it. All my applets runs well with the current Internet Explorer. If you already knows quit a bit of Java, this book is probably not for you. It just covers the basic stuff, but enough for me!

Summary: falls apart
Comment: I bought this book a year ago and due to the incrediblly poor binding in the paperback edition, the pages actually fall out of the book.
Rating: 5
Summary: Excellent introductory text
Comment: I got my start in java programming with this book. Very clear without being condescending. These authors know how to write well. The book covers most basic areas of java programming in enough detail to be usable. The only lacking area is the number of concrete examples, but it's still a great intro to the language.
