Comment: If you're a young woman who's trying to survive in the world on your own, with no family, friends, or someone who's there to talk to then, you should read The Coldest Winter Ever. This realistic ghetto fiction is about a young girl named Winter trying to survive in the world by using the knowledge which her father taught her. Sister Souljah, a character as well as the author, created a good atmosphere where everything took place. It's about lies, secrets, betrayal, murder and drugs. I give this book two thumbs up and five stars.
Rating: 5
Summary: Riveting, Raw, and Real
Comment: The Coldest Winter Ever is a timeless novel with a vital message for today's youth: Anything that comes fast and easy is a sure path to destruction. Souljah does not preach or beat us over the head with her message either, and that is refreshing.
This highly readable page-turner will definitely keep your attention well into the night, so don't start it at bedtime unless you're a night owl! The engrossing story details the life and times of Winter, the sexy, wealthy daughter of a Brooklyn drug lord. Winter will do whatever it takes to get her way, and she usually does until things suddenly change for the family and Winter is forced to use her street smarts to survive.
Winter is a deeply drawn character, and readers will continually be shocked at just how far this girl will go to stay on top. It's a credit to Souljah that we still see Winter's human vulnerability underneath all that libido, anger, and bravado. We almost fear that Winter will never realize that her choices have consequences and that she's getting ever closer to the brink of destruction. The ending is too powerful to give away, so I'll leave it for readers to discover why The Coldest Winter Ever is a must-read for all fans of urban drama.
