Summary: A haunting, gorgeously written tale
Comment: asha bandele tells the truth about falling in love with a prisoner, a brother convicted of murder during a robbery gone bad. She meets him on a visit to the prison, where she has gone to read her work. bandele is an amazing poet, and in this memoir, the writing carries you along like a wave, hypnotic, painful, lyrical, unflinching. You begin to see how she could have fallen in love with Rashid, despite his past. You begin to believe in his transformation. You begin to understand. Your understanding is a testament to bandele's honesty, her refusal to pretend that reality is other than it is. And yet, as she says at the begining and the end of this book, This is a love story. Love flourishes even in barren, institutional places. A courageous book. Bravo, asha! I wish you well.

Summary: I kept waiting for the story to begin
Comment: The Prisoner's Wife was an interesting and poignant memoir. Asha Bandele writes beautifully. I was mesmerized by the poetic flow of her words from the very beginning. However, I, like one of the other reviewers, believe that Ms. Bandele was so focused on the poetry that she failed to tell a complete story. I kept waiting for the real story to begin. I was looking for descriptions of her day-to-day experiences, what she did to cope with the lonliness, specific details of the beginnings of their relationship, how they came to fall in love in the first place. I wanted to truly understand Asha and what led her to become "The Prisoners Wife"-- but the author never truly let us see her complete self. While she shared her painful past, the story seemed as if it had been written by an outside observer-- not the person who'd actually experienced the pain firsthand. As beautiful a story as it was, I think the soul of the story was missing.

Summary: One Woman's Story
Comment: I think this book tells a truly beautiful story of this woman and her prison relationship with her man. To me the book was a little slow and had a lot of typos that should have been caught. If a woman finds herself in love with a prisoner then this could be a good way to understand what some others are going through. However, her visits are nowhere as tough as some of the visits I've known California women to go through.
