Title: Jessica by Bryce Courtenay ISBN: 0-670-88351-4 Publisher: Viking Pub. Date: 1998 Format: Unknown Binding |
Average Customer Rating: 4.5 (14 reviews)
Rating: 5
Summary: Very good reading
Comment: Jessica is an excellent book. I found that it keep my interest through the whole thing....I couldn't wait to find out what happened next in Jessica's life. The writing is easy to follow and understand, and the descriptions are wonderful...it was easy to imagine the hardship of living in Australia at that time. It was a tear jerker though, and I can admit to crying while reading it, especially at the end.
I've read The Power of One, and Tandia, also by Bryce Courtenay, which were both good, especially The Power of One, but I'd say that I enjoyed this one more and really couldn't put it down until I was done. I recommend it highly.
Rating: 4
Summary: A tear- jerker!
Comment: This book was really easy to read and easy to get into. You felt like you were part of the main character's life, Jessica. What an amazing woman! Her life was horrible and she was mistreated throughout it, but she remained a strong person who is very admirable. I don't know how she lived through each day with the world against her. Although it was a good book, it was also very depressing. I cried through the entire book and the ending is not exactly happy. But it is a true story so that is very inspirational. I suggest you read it, but if you are very emotional this might not be the book for you because it leaves you with an empty feeling. Overall it was very well-written.
Rating: 5
Summary: Frustrating, but fantastic
Comment: I recommend this book as it is a highly emotional and involving read. Courtenay's Power of One is my favorite book. One of the earlier reviews said that Jessica's character development was better. I disagree , however, Jessica is still amazing. I couldn't put the book down until I'd finished it. If you like books that incorporate culture, class, and gender issues then Jessica is for you. Jessica gave me a taste of Australia just as the Power of One gave me the warmth of Africa. I didn't cry... much, but I felt the injustice and self-righteousness burning right through me as I read. Unlike one reviewer, I continue to think about this book and its lessons of survival, friendship, and love.
