Summary: Advice from the best!
Comment: Mary Leonhardt's books advise parents on how to deal with their childrens' often-beligerent attitude to reading, or in this case, specifically homework. While Leonhardt's advice sometimes seems radical or atypical of teachers' advice, I have learned firsthand that Leonhardt knows what she's doing. I took Mary Leonhardt's British Literature course Junior year of high school, where the majority of work was self-guided and self-organized. While her teaching style was quite different from that of the other teachers in the department, I and many of the other students in the class agree that she got the best results of any teacher at the school. While you may take issue with some of Leonhardt's advice, you can't argue with results. All of Leonhardt's books are highly recommended.

Summary: The book slightly misrepresents itself
Comment: The author spends a lot of time telling you that many homework assignments are trivial, and it is not so tragic if your child doesn't do them all. This may be true, but the problem remains - how do I get my kid to do the assignment? I didn't think the author had anything to say that I didn't already know.

Summary: Breakthrough Parenting Self Help Book
Comment: Mary Leonhardt's 99 Ways to Get Your Kids to Do Their Homework is a breakthrough in Parenting Self Help Books. Instead of traditional Parenting Self Help Books - where you have to wade through hundreds of pages of professional viewpoints and educational studies to get one kernel of usable advise - Ms. Leonhardt's book is packed with insightful "out of box" thinking that can make a huge impact on not only your child's success at homework, but more importantly, a lifelong love of learning.

Last year when my daughter, Kathy, was in 1st grade, homework was a nightmare is our house. By following several tips in this book we completely turned around the situation, and now Kathy has taken complete responsibility for her assignments. She loves being in charge, and I no longer worry about having everything done perfectly. More importantly, I know that she is now on the right track for a lifetime of reading and learning.

I also highly recommend Mary Leonhardt's other 3 books: Parents Who Love Reading, Kids Who Don't; 99 Ways to Get Kids to Love Reading; and 99 Ways to Get Kids to Love Writing.
