Summary: Small but complete
Comment: This is a real good book for you to get started with the .NET framework if you have a foundation with any object oriented programming language such as C++ and Java.
This book starts with theories. In the first three chapters, the book starts with the design goals of the .NET framework and the background theory on how the .net framework works. A few simple examples then show the power of object oriented programming features and the language interoperability of the framework.
Interoperability with COM and COM+ were then mentioned with a few easy to understand example.
The next few chapters come with the 4 corner stones of the .net framework, namely ADO.NET, Web Services, Web Forms and Windows Forms. The magic of the book is the authors successfully help the reader to understand the key concept of the section with less than a hundred lines of code for each example, and build it up step-by-step. These short and to-the-point examples help you to understand everything in a short time.
This book mainly uses C# as the language for illustration. One more good point of this book is its small-size which allow me to easily read through it on a bus.

Summary: very thorough overview of .NET services
Comment: My goal when I read "overview" books is to quickly figure out whether or not this tool/technology solves the problem at hand.
Many books (java and XML most notably) fall short of this by not giving enough technical depth of the subject, and by providing little more than the "hello world" sample application. I can figure this out for myself.
However, this book is plenty deep when it comes to explaining the facilities that .NET provides. This book addresses not just the new APIs with substantive examples, but it also addresses the .NET runtime environment and deployment details as well. It even goes under the covers of the ADO.NET and Web Services APIs and explains the underlying technologies (XML Schemas, WSDL, SOAP) to prove that this is not just another proprietary distributed application platform.
This book is perfect for architects who are evaluating building a system with .NET, and developers who are interested in getting their feet wet with .NET technology. A wonderful book that presents the .NET core libraries in a straightforward way.

Summary: good overview
Comment: An excellent overview. You'll need more to get serious about .NET but to discover what .NET is all about and
decide if its what you want, this is great. You do
need a bit of previous MS experience(COM etc)
