Summary: Surprisingly interesting and informative
Comment: After reading Davis' HERETICS: The Bloody History, I began to look at the author's earlier works, specifically this book. In this, Davis first book shows the authors ability to think critically and yet present the information to the reader in a creative and succinct manner. In this book, written while Davis attended seminary training for the priesthood, his talents are on display in the history, organization and summation of this short work in such a way that it makes for very interesting reading on a number of fronts. The stories and characters in this book are genuine and real; the events, some tragic, others joyous, are so replete with detail that much of the book reads like a collection of short fiction, rather than as a theological treatise. Of his other books I have read thus far, none is better at examining the ill-conceived views of many people, both agnostic and Christian. Davis shows the development of the idea of miracles from Biblical texts to modern day usage and clears away much of the fluff we read in other books of similar genre. This approach is works great for those who are not sure where they stand on the acceptance of the miraculous, and so may find Davis philosophical perspectives rather straightforward and easy to digest. Although this book may never sell so well as Davis' other books, in my opinion it should. In the end, it is an impeccable inquiry into the all too often natural events that everyday people experience daily. Davis uses his remarkable logic to build a solid argument both for and against the existence of miracles.

Summary: My mom is into "warm and fuzzy"
Comment: My mother is a devout Christian and thought this book was wonderfull. That being said please understand that I did not buy the "Miracle" explanations, however, this is a review I am writing at her behest. She claims that the book tells the glorious gifts that the LORD provides of the faithfull. Compared to Davis' other books (most recent of which is "Just Smoke and Mirrors" this is a 180 degree change. It is obvious he wrote this as a younger person). IF you believe that miracles can happen...then I guess this would be the book for you. If you want hope and to read stories that seem to "lack" natural explanations, then read this book. My mom collects this type of book--and even liked Davis and Sagan's book "HERETICS" because of the historical aspects. But if you don't buy this drivel.... don't buy this book. If you are a person of "faith" it is right up your alley (or should I say "vestable???")
