Summary: Well Done! A Fun, Quick Read.
Comment: Being a great fan of any literary work involving pirates, I'm constantly looking for new things to read. Of course, the range of books goes from one extreme to other; some read more like fact-by-fact text books and can be reviewed on the accuracy of their historic references. And then there are others -- much fewer and further between, in my experience -- that choose to take the theme of piracy and create a fun, lively fictional adventure. This one fits into the latter category.

Am I ever glad I found it.

Sherry starts with Bart Roberts on the first page and never leaves him. You won't go hopping from setting-to-setting and sub-plot to sub-plot in this one; you go where Black Bart goes.

Bart, in this book, has a little "Captain Blood" in him. He is ruthlessly gallant, I suppose, but very likeable, as are many of the other key characters. Woodes Rogers, in particular, comes into the picture midway through the story and offers some genuine laughs and a whole lot of fun.

The fight scenes in this book are really well done. The descriptions are graphic but not gross, and the action rips through the pages like chain shot through the top sails.

There are many great books out there that deal with the historical details of life as a pirate -- Zacks' "The Pirate Hunter" was terrific, as is Cordingly's "Under the Black Flag" -- but sadly, books like "The Devil's Captain" are harder to find.

If you love pirates and you'd like a quick, fun read, grab this book. The only others of a fictional nature I enjoyed as much as this are "Captain Blood" and A.D. Howden Smith's "Porto Bello Gold," which I would highly reccomend if you like stuff like this.

I really enjoyed this book, and felt I needed to say so in the off chance that Sherry might see this review.

To Frank Sherry, bravo, and thanks. And ... I wouldn't mind knowing whether Ogle gets to Bart before Bart gets to Ocracoke, if you have a mind to write a follow-up!

Summary: Not what I expected
Comment: My perception buying this book was of a historical fiction. This is just fiction, only the names are real. If you like Errol Flynn movies this'll make you happy, but is otherwise rather boring and uniformative.

Summary: High Seas Adventure
Comment: This is one of my favorite pirate books. I have read many and collect pirate and seafaring tales. For a recently written pirate story this is a fun, fast, and an exciting read. Not many pirate books are written any more, which is a shame.
It starts on the coast of Africa with slaves and voodoo and rapidly moves across the Atlantic to the Caribbean. The main character, Bart Roberts, only becomes a pirate when captured and he sets certain morals for himself and crew (similar to the Flynn movies).
If you like action, sailing, pirates, ship to ship combat, and yes a little romance. Then this is one of the best more recent pirate stories.
A funny foot note: I orignally purchased this book by an author named Philp Shea with the same title. I wonder if Frank Sherry and Shea are the same person. Because these are the exact same books.
Another Recommendation: On Stranger Tides, by Tim Powers. Another great pirate adventure with voodoo and ghosts.
