Summary: Amazing
Comment: So much of the history about WW!! tells (rightly so) about the soldiers and the politics. This book is all true recollections of the wives and mothers of those soldiers. These women had to live daily not only with the fear of their loved ones' deaths, but often their own. The starvation, the deprivation, the uncertainty, and the movement of foreign soldiers through their homes and lives begin to describe the experience. Even after the war officially ended (at least as far as the politicians were concerned) for many women, the hell was only beginning. Many occupying soldiers were utter barbarians, women were often displaced refugees with children, in search of men who -if they ever came home- they wouldn't see for maybe years after the end of fighting. I read this and wonder if I could ever be so brave. I recommend this book highly for the lover of womens studies, of memoirs; and especially for the war buff to see a different view of humanity behind the lines.
