Summary: Readable, knowledgeable survey of 17-18th c instrumntl music
Comment: Hogwood writes wonderfully and knows the subject in intimate detail. In this very short book, he first outlines how the melody-with-chordal-bass structure came to be established--and how changes in taste, particularly the increased popularity of the violin, contributed to the trio sonata's growth--and then covers stylistic developments country by country and composer by composer, including among other examples the consort music of Lupo, the suites and sonades of Couperin, and the sonatas of Corelli, Leclair, Bach, etc,. An excellent book, and a great shame that it's out of print!
