Title: Assassin's Quest (The Farseer Trilogy, Book 3) by Robin Hobb ISBN: 0-553-56569-9 Publisher: Bantam Pub. Date: 05 January, 1998 Format: Mass Market Paperback Volumes: 1 List Price(USD): $6.99 |
Average Customer Rating: 3.99 (193 reviews)
Rating: 3
Summary: Almost but not there at the end...
Comment: Having read all three volumes of the Farseer Trilogy, I cannot think of this book separately. It is the conlusion of the story and as such, gives us the complete picture of the author's intentions. This is one reason that I must be "stricter" on my review.
So, why should you read that book? Read below!
1.The reader is able to connect immediately with the main character, our hero, FitzChivalry. You feel like Fitz is someone very close to you, you share with him his fears, his sorrows, his happiness...everything.I caught myself thinking of Fitz many times during the day while I was working, or eating or being with friends.
2.The concept of the Wit magic is a very interesting, original one
and immensely enjoyable.
3. The beginning of the book is breath-taking,I was enchanted by it.
4. The depiction of the book's world is very lively.
But,on the other side...
1.Somewhere in the middle, the plot slows down significantly and there were moments that I wondered if what I was reading was necessary to be told.
2.I found the ending somehow brief.I felt that there were things that had to be described in more detail. There were other parts of the book that details were almost boring and I expected that the author would "pay homage" to her hero and her book at the end.
3.There were some parts of the book that were incomprehensible. R.Hobb in her effort to surprise the reader or to give a dreamy essense, made me wonder "what the heck is she talking about?".The chapter "Verity's bargain" is one example.
I gave this book a 3, but if I could I would give it a 3 1/2.
Volumes 1 and 2 get a 4.I tried not to say anything that would betray the plot, because I think that one of the things we enjoy in reading a book is the unexpected.
I would recommend you to read the book, but I have to say that it didn't leave its mark on me and I am not going to include it on my top-ten list of good books.
Rating: 1
Summary: Horrible.
Comment: The worst book ending I can recall. See my reviews of books 1 and 2 (and PAY ATTENTION!!! Stop at book 1 for the sake of...) - it is with a resigned sense of duty that I write this one. I almost stopped reading book 2 a couple of times it was so awful, but I thought that maybe I was being overly-negative and hey, I already bought book 3 so money's already lost and may as well see if old Hobb can save the story in the end (remember, the 1st book wasn't so bad). WRONG. WRONG. WRONG.
This book deserves 0 stars. Let's imagine for a moment a very, very lazy writer. This writer is also very, very arrogant and does not respect her readers's intelligence (she knows something the reader doesn't, you see - she knows herself). And let's suppose this writer used up all of her (apparently) limited talent on one, first book. And hooray for it was a success. But alas the publisher wants to make more money - let's just write more books! And if we have to change established characters, settings, behaviors, and even history in order to enable some scant figment of story to continue to regurgitate itself on the page, well that's ok.
I WILL NEVER READ ANOTHER ROBIN HOBB BOOK AGAIN.

Summary: Mixed Feelings
Comment: First of all, I must agree with a couple of the other reviewers about the cover art for the series. I compared what I saw with my minds eye (as described within the pages) and took a look at the portrayals on the covers, and had to think "No".
Also, let me say that I both enjoyed the majority of the trilogy and would recommend it as a stirring read. My eyes welled up more than once throughout the saga and I found myself compelled to keep reading for a sizable chunk of my winter break. I have come to be very attached to the characters (especially FitzChivalry) and I'm sure you'll find me pouring through the Tawny Man series on my next break despite some of my reservations.
Here's the deal. I hate what is done the the main character by the author in the third book. If it is the author's intent to simply evoke strong emotions in the reader haphazardly, then BRAVO ROBIN HOBB! Boy was I pissed off and irritated through most of the book. After growing with the character through the first two books, I'm just not convinced with the way the author had him acting and reacting to a lot of situations. (*Notice I'm trying desperately not to give too much away). I also hate how it all ends up (*Notice now I'm trying desperately not to swear).
I think Fitz should have been given a lot more growth, maturity, and reward (if not redemption) by the book's end. I felt he was screwed by the author and the other characters (via the author) even though other reviewers will maintain it's the "best ending ever"...Hey guys, were we reading the same GD book?
I pray to El and Eda that Fitz catches a break in the next series because the couple in the apartment next to me have asked that I not slam books against the wall anymore.
