Summary: Top of the line for secondary level special educators!
Comment: I teach a university course on teaching students with learning disabilities at the middle school and high school level. Since I switched to this book as the textbook for that course, I have had rave reviews from my students about it. They have found it to be readable and informative with lots that they can take away and use immediately.
I have found that it gives well-researched and balanced coverage to this area that has relatively little attention. Many books pay lip service to the unique demands of working with adolescents with mild disabilities while covering the broad educational range. Few focus specifically on this population. This book handles all the areas necessary for developing excellent programs for adolescents with mild disabilities: Adolescent development, motivation, assessment, learning strategies, curriculum modifications, transition planning, etc. Controversial topics, such as learning styles, are discussed in ways that make sense to educators - research evidence is discussed, alternative explanations are considered, and practical implications are presented.
The authors clearly know the concerns and needs of special educators working with adolescents, as well as the demands of the secondary school teaching and learning environment. Their book quickly became my favorite in this specialized area.
