Summary: A necessary read
Comment: This is a book every teacher should read. It was written honestly and I was quickly absorbed by the teacher's struggle and personal life.
Rating: 5
Summary: A good honest book
Comment: This was a humorous look at teaching in South Central Los Angeles. All the struggle and pain comes through but you can't help but laugh at all the troubles. A wonderful read.
Rating: 1
Summary: Doesn't know where it is going
Comment: I wonder what the author's goal is in this book? Is she trying to write a Harlequin Romance novel or a tell all story about becoming a teacher in South Central Los Angeles? If she is trying to do the later, then she should have elaborated and described the conditions of the schools, the students, and the problems about being in that system rather than just stick in a few pages in the end about a problem student of hers.
Also, she should have left out all the troubles that she had wearing high heel shoes -- it is just unbelievable that someone wouldn't have anything but high heel shoes (even if they used to work in the corporate world). As well as leaving out all the whining about heavy workloads and confusion on the first few days of school.
In addition to the context problems, the book itself is poorly written and organized.
Finally, on the brighter side -- it could have been an interesting book and the topic should be explored. We need to know what the true state of affairs is in our school system even if it is controversial.
