Summary: Excellent Reference Resource for Philosophy
Comment: I noticed in the bibliography section of many of the current philosophy texts that I have read that this dictionary was listed or recommended. That was the number one reason why I bought this reference work. Having read and used it for the last three years, I can see why it is so recommended. The Board of Editorial Advisors for the book is amazing (i.e. William P. Alston, Fred Dretske, Norman Kretzmann, Alan Gewirth, etc.). Some of the contributors include Marilyn McCord Adams, Fred Dretske, C. Stephen Evans, William Hasker, Kai Nielson, Luis P. Pojman, William L. Rowe, Robert C. Solomon, Peter Van Inwagen, William J. Wainwright, Nicholas P. Wolterstorff, Keith E. Yandell, and many, many more. This dictionary covers everything imaginable in the area of philosophy (all branches), and even some theology. Furthermore, Philosophers are covered, what they taught is covered, and reaction to what certain philosophers taught is covered as well. It contains 4,000 entries written by some 380 scholars/specialists. Thus, it is as the back cover totes, an "indispensable one-volume dictionary."

Summary: review corrected-better than the Oxford dic.
Comment: Previous review corrected: after using the Oxford dictionary for some time, and then returning to the Cambridge one, I found out that this is absolutely better, more extensive and comprehensive. Oxford dic. has a more amiable format with bibligraphies etc. but the coverage of this one is far broader.
Well, okay, this may be the best available of its kind.. but still poor in many respects. Tainted by a ridiculous multi-culturalist concern which doesnt befit a serious philosophical attitude.. philosophical concepts are mostly absent outside the current analytic terms, and continental philosophy seems to be represented in terms of a poor treatment of certain important figures rather than serious explication of relevant concepts.. If youre a student of analytic philosophy you'll find important concepts like truth tables or coherentism covered in detail.. that is the only satisfactory aspect of this dictionary.

Summary: Very satisfying. But sure enough, an hour later...
Comment: This fine reference performs its function admirably, cataloguing the most important milestones in the history of philosophy and explaining abstruse ideas in clear language. What it really lacks, though, is some good ethnic jokes.
