Summary: Recognizing bias
Comment: From reading the text, I find that the major reasons for the swelling White Nationalist movement include:

1) Racist policies such as Affirmative action, and Racial quotas

2) Outsourcing of American jobs to the third world

3) Import of cheap labor and undermining wages and living
standards through illegal mexican and latin american
immigrants

4) Loss of mainstream American culture and values due to
competing interests inherent in multiculturalism

5) Destruction and displacement of Euro-Americans through
third world immigration, and high third-world birth rates

6) Neo-con driven war in the Mid-east, due to Islamic attention
to American "zionism"

7) Restrictions of free speech due to Political Correctness

My appraisal is that these are all valid concerns. Considering the fact that all of these issues are worsening rather than improving, I suspect that White Nationalism will continue to gain momentum throughout the West. The author makes it clear where she stands on the issue. Therefore, I find it thorough and well written but biased. For a comprehensive background written from a WN perspective, visit

Summary: Something genuinely new from Cambridge Univ. Press
Comment: I am surprised to be the first reviewer of this book. Materials on white nationalism usually draw a good deal of attention from Amazon.com reviewers.

This is a consistently interesting volume that contains ten extended interviews with a spectrum of white writers and organizers whose views on race relations fall well outside of the mainstream.

The net is thrown wide. The interviewees include the lucid Jared Taylor, editor of _American Renaissance_ magazine (who is, in his way, a significant public intellectual, and would be well known if not for our present racial double standards); Michael Levin, philosopher of science at CUNY and a critic of contemporary egalitarian theories of race; David Duke, the well-known former Louisiana state legislator and current federal prisoner; Don Black, the webmaster of Stormfront.org; Rev. Dan Gayman, minister of an obscure Anglo-Israelite sect in Missouri; pompous neo-Nazi lightweight Matt Hale of the "World Church of the Creator," now under indictment for allegedly plotting to kill a federal judge; and frightening neo-Nazi heavyweight Dr. William Pierce of the National Alliance, author of the _Turner Diaries_, who recently died of cancer.

Not all of the interviewees are bright. Some readers will wish for a book that gave more space to the most articulate spokesmen for each position -- say, Taylor, Levin, Duke, Prof. Michael Hart, Black, and Pierce.

Nevertheless, this is, for better or worse, the closest thing to a scholarly anthology of white rights and white nationalist ideas ever to be offered by a major university publisher. In the lengthy Introduction, co-editors Carol Swain and Russell Nieli offer a historical and critical essay intended to counter the arguments presented by the interviewees. The resulting book could serve as a balanced primary source for a bold university course on race relations.

Mr. Nieli conducted all the interviews. I thought his questions were fairly sharp: he challenged his subjects without badgering or alienating them. He scores some interesting points on Prof. Levin (re: the relative lack of cultural pathology in certain black Caribbean nations, which seems to tell against Levin's genetics-based theory of differential group achievement) and on Pierce (re: the important contributions of Jews to Pierce's own field of physics, and to other forms of culture).

Professor Swain's earlier, book-length study of white nationalism, _The New White Nationalism in America_ (Cambridge 2002), was impressive for its relatively fair-minded treatment of these controversial ideas. The ten interviews here were conducted as part of Swain's research for that book.

(_The New White Nationalism_ is somewhat turgidly written, but Swain's unusual perspectives on contemporary race relations give it value. This companion volume, however, is probably the better buy.)

In general _Contemporary Voices_ reflects a similar intellectual seriousness. The Introduction leaves no doubt of the editors' opposition to the premises and goals of white nationalism. However, they let their subjects speak their minds, and make a point of fairly summarizing each interviewee's position at the beginning of the interview. Swain and Nieli argue with their interviewees, rather than vilify them. They rarely dull the reader's wits by throwing around indiscriminate epithets like "hate," as propaganda groups like the ADL are apt to do. To be sure, William Pierce and Matt Hale clearly do despise other races, as do many of the people who post on Stormfront. But when applied to Taylor, or to Reno Wolfe of the NAAWP, or to some of the other interviewees, the term is not appropriate. It is not a matter of hate, but of stark disagreement about proper social policy for the twenty-first century.

As I said, this is an interesting volume that addresses a topic on which serious debate is often suppressed. I respect Swain and Nieli's commitment to open debate and am pleasantly surprised that a major academic house like Cambridge published their compilation.
